FOREVER COOLIN

On a cold Saturday night – December 28th, 1985, My partner Zear and I went to the 1 tunnels at 145th Street and Broadway. We had been planning a New Year’s car for a few weeks. In early December we fell into some paint that was forfeited by some other writers visiting the 1s’ unannounced (if you are out there, Good Looking!). In that Winter of ‘85 there was an explosion of train painting on the 1’s. There was the 156 Crew, I.B.M., F.B.A., T.S.F., M.B.T., N.T.A. , and F.C.. Some writers would even visit from others lines and other boroughs to rock at 145th Street. In ‘84 and early ‘85 painting on the 1’s was a lonely affair, but by the end of ‘85 there was a party going on at 145th street. There were little beefs here and there, and healthy competition, but all told it was a general time of prosperity for Broadway. Most writers, like myself took photo’s only of my own work, but going through my old flicks recently I caught a couple long shots of the train and I remembered that every Monday morning entire trains would pull out with all ten cars painted.

This car had the crook & cop characters from Cookie Crisp cereal – which I don’t think even exists anymore. We had done many pieces on the 1’s in Silver (to cover all of the ink on the outsides), and this time we decided to use Gold paint. There is also an IBM in the upper tight hand corner (cut off in this image), and the cartoon bomb with the 85, and the lit fuse in the center. To the left of this car was a whole car by Sak, Dae, and Sae (FC) on top it had a ‘Masters Burn Together’ simple style, and on the sides characters of Run-DMC. To the right of this car was the ‘Kyle Wars, Part II’ car, by Jon One and Kyle featuring lots of alien characters – and most notably C3PO, and R2D2 with a Kangol hat.

Zear and I came back to add some last touches to the car on Sunday night the 29th, and it was late. All of the other cars were there finished waiting in the dark for their Monday morning debut at 125th St.. Knowing we would be the last ones in the tunnel that weekend we wrote “The last Car of 1985” on one side, and “The First Car of 1986” on the other.
